Frog

  • Frogs, basically, have not changed since they were created
  • The 4 NZ native species are shown in the pictures to your left:  Archie, Hamilton, Hochstetter and Maude Island
  • They are nocturnal which means that they hunt at night
  • All frogs are well camouflaged and very hard to see
  • Usually found in moist shady areas by the edges of streams and lakes throughout NZ
  • The distinctives of NZ native frogs are:
  • No external eardrum
  • Round eyes
  • Irregular croaking 2 stages to their life cycle
  • Frogs are generally on the decline worldwide
  • Man’s imposing upon land, its use of chemicals and poisons are wiping out frog habitats
  • Cats and rats enjoy a feed of frog
