Rimu

Helpful Information

  • Rimu is found throughout NZ.
  • Found in the North Island mainly.
  • Its common name is the Red Pine.
  • Rimu can grow to an age of 800 years.
  • Its average height of 40m
  • The diameter of 2m.
  • Rimu is slow growing so the timber is relatively hard and makes excellent furniture.

Bark & Foliage

  • The bark is dark brown and smooth.
  • Old bark tends to peel off.
  • The leaves are spirally arranged up to 10mm long in young plants which droop downwards like a weeping willow.

Flowers and Fruit

  • There are male and female trees.
  • The male tree bears yellow pollen cones in spring.
  • The seed is in the crown and hidden.
  • The female seed is black and is found enclosed at the base of the red fleshy fruit.
  • Birds play a part in the pollination particularly the Tui, Wood Pigeon and the Kakapo
